Dr. Sivasubramaniam, Head of Department

The 3 main branches of Oncology are Medical (treated by medicines or chemicals), Surgical (treated by surgery), and Radiation (treated by radiation). Medical Oncology is a super speciality or higher speciality branch where the doctor is trained for 3 more years post M.D. and is equivalent to PhD degree. Among these 3 branches, a Medical oncologist plays the maximum role in treating cancer patients because apart from administering chemotherapy, he/she has additional roles like a clinical oncologist, where he basically investigates and does work up to diagnose and stage cancer to plan treatment properly. He/she also gives supportive care to cancer patients since they can also develop various complications due to cancer due to treatment. He/she provides palliative care and pain management as well.
