We are elated to share the success of CANSTOP’s 15th Annual Camp He.. Ho.. Ha.., a remarkable two-day residential event that unfolded at Dakshinachitra on November 25-26, 2023. This joyous occasion was a testament to the power of community and the positive impact that collective efforts can bring.
The camp, attended by 35 families and 140 participants, was a vibrant celebration of Health, Hope, and Happiness. From revitalizing yoga sessions to the exuberant thrill of pot breaking, every moment was crafted to create lasting memories and foster a sense of togetherness.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the generous sponsors whose support played a pivotal role in the success of this event. Special thanks to Ms. Janet of Depenning & Depenning, Ms. Debora Thiagarajan of Dakshinachithra, and CANSTOP for orchestrating this wonderful gathering.
SMF is especially proud to have served as the Health Partner for this event, contributing to the well-being of all participants. Our commitment to community health is unwavering, and events like these reinforce the importance of collective efforts in creating a healthier and happier society.

“Can-Stop (Cancer Support Therapy to Overcome Pain) is a community-based, voluntary organization dedicated to helping people affected with cancer by providing counseling services in a holistic manner to patients, family, and friends, conducting awareness programs, and screening camps through education and advocacy.” “CAN-STOP,” in its 26th year of service, extends support to patients of lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
To commemorate the international Breast Cancer Awareness month, CANSTOP and Rotary District 3232 have organized an awareness walkathon, “One Walk One Hope” on October 29th, 2023, at Olcott Memorial School, Besant Nagar.Dr. Thamizhachi Thangapandian, MP South Chennai and Member of the Lok Sabha, was the chief guest for the event, and she flagged off the walkathon. Rtn. Ravi Raman District Governor, RID 3232; Rtn. N. S Saravanan District Governor Elect, RID 3232; Rtn. Vinod Saraogi District Governor Nominee, RID 3232; Rtn. Shobana Ravi, District First Lady, RID 3232; Dr. Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan, Founder of CANSTOP, Trustee & Director- SMF and other Rotarians , were invited as guests of honor.
The walk stresses the importance of Breast cancer—early detection, prevention, and self-breast examination—with the strong message “Hope Starts with ME” Organizing for the 14th year, more than 3000 people participated as a part of this event. The walk not only involves the participation of survivors—women—but also men who care for the women in their lives—their mother, wife, sister, aunt, and friends. School and college students and the general public also participated. Many stalls were there to educate the participants about the importance of Breast cancer, early detection, & prevention.
Apart from the awareness walk at Olcott School, this event also organized a Human Pink Ribbon Formation, Blood Donation Camp, Free Medical camp and Zumba. SMF is proud and happy to announce to its patients that the clinical laboratory services at the Main Hospital & at the OPD services SMF Annexe have been granted Accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), a prestigious certification that recognizes the quality and competence of our testing services.
Securing NABL accreditation is not just a certification; but is a testament to our commitment to excellence, precision, and continuous improvement. This recognition validates our laboratory’s technical competence, adherence to International standards ISO 15189:2012, and our ability to consistently provide reliable results.
Our journey towards NABL accreditation has been rigorous and challenging. It involved meticulous preparation, coordinated planning & team effort, comprehensive internal audits, and rigorous assessments by an experienced team of lab professionals comprising 8 external experts extending over 4 days for both the centers.
NABL accreditation process encourages us to constantly review and enhance our procedures, methods, and quality control measures. And this in turn leads to reduced errors, ensuring greater patient and clinician satisfaction.

Activities for the month of May 2023

May was an action-packed month with many activities planned by CANSTOP and CANNEST.
SMF HICC organized a Hand Hygiene Program on May 9th, 2023, to raise awareness about proper hand hygiene. It emphasized the importance of preventing germ spread, particularly in healthcare settings. We appreciate the enthusiastic participation of healthcare workers in demonstrating the correct hand hygiene steps.
On May 31st, CANSTOP organized an awareness program at Anna Nagar Tower Park to commemorate World No Tobacco Day. The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. P V Jayasankar from SMF, followed by a captivating street theatre performance by Samathuvali and Karpi Kalai Kulu.
CANSTOP hosted a Sticker Campaign at CMBT Omni Bus depot to raise tobacco awareness for World No Tobacco Day. The event involved dedicated volunteers from CANSTOP who actively participated. Over the course of the week-long campaign, around 200 buses were adorned with stickers as part of the initiative.
The nutrition project ensured coconut water was distributed. The Drug Bank distributed free medicines to needy patients.Our little patients demonstrated their drawing skills and participated in yoga classes. A medical camp was organised in partnership with the Rotary Club at T. Nagar to provide basic health checkups for the community members.

For the 25th Dr. S. Rangarajan Memorial Oration, Dr. Mathew Cherian, Chief of Radiology Services, Kovai Medical Centre, Coimbatore, was the Chief Guest and his oration was coined as “Seven Short Stories.” The event was well attended by SMF Directors, Deputy Medical Directors, Consultants, and all the SMF family members. The wonderful evening ended with the customary vote of thanks by Dr. P.V. Jayasankar – Trustee & Medical Director.

Annadanam

Annadanam

Annadanam is the purest form of advocating compassion and unity and has been an integral part of Sundaram Medical Foundation. On 17th June 2023, Annadanam was conducted to mark our founder Dr. S. Rangarajan’s death anniversary. It started with an offering of pooja at the Sundara Vinayagar statue at SMF, and food was served to 1160 people from all walks of life.

Hand Hygiene Program was organised by SMF HICC on 9th May 2023 to create awareness about the importance of proper steps of hand hygiene. It is extremely important to prevent the spread of germs, especially in hospital settings and healthcare-related facilities. We at SMF take hand hygiene very seriously, and this program reiterated that we appreciate the healthcare workers who participated enthusiastically in demonstrating the proper steps of hand hygiene.

FORUM (Focused Overviews, Reviews, and Updates in Medicine) is a unique annual conference for primary care providers, consultants, and postgraduates. This is the 25th successive year, with the theme for this edition being “Imaging in Contemporary Clinical Practice.” FORUM 2023 will be held on 10th June 2023 at Radha Regent, Arumbakkam, Chennai. Registration at 8:15 AM on 10th June 2023 and inauguration at 8:45 AM.
The Conference will be followed by a one-day workshop on 11th June 2023 at Sundaram Medical Foundation (SMF), OP Block at Mogappair, Chennai.
Forum 2023 invites papers & posters on the same theme; the best three in each category will be awarded exciting prizes.
Attendance at the conference & workshop will attract credit points from the Tamilnadu Medical Council.

CANSTOP has organised an online painting contest for children aged 5 to 15, with the theme for World No Tobacco Day 2022 being “Smoking: A Threat to the Environment”. Winners of the competition were awarded a cash voucher and E-Certificate.

The Women’s Hospital in Egmore hosted CANSTOP’s official Pongal celebration on January 12, 2022. Dr Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan, our founder, participated in the festivities, where earthen pots were decorated, and conventional kilns were set up to prepare the Sweet Pongal. The patients’ jubilant shouts of “Pongalo Pongal” reverberated throughout the room. The patients performed dances for everyone’s enjoyment and participated in rangoli and pot-breaking competitions.

CANSTOP conducted a Sticker Campaign at CMBT Omni Bus depot to create tobacco awareness for World No Tobacco Day. Volunteers of CANSTOP were also part of the event. A total of 200 buses were covered in stickers during the week-long campaign.

CANSTOP organised Laughing Therapy for female patients at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The event, which mainly covered how to use humour to relieve pain and stress and improve a person’s sense of well-being, was attended by the patients and their caregivers. A resource person, Mr Sirippanda Sampath, a master of laughter yoga, led the session.

On April 11, CANSTOP donated in-skirts and nighties to the women who had battled cancer at the Egmore Hospital. These items were made by women from the Sembakkam tailoring unit and sponsored by Rtn. Jayshree Sridhar. The women in the cancer wards welcomed it joyfully.

Oral Screening Camps

Oral Screening Camps

CANSTOP held oral screening sessions for the general public and truck drivers in 3 locations: Madhavaram, T.Nagar, and Annanagar. To better detect oral cancer in its early stages and increase public awareness of it. As a result, 320 individuals benefited from these camps, including members of the general public and truck drivers in the Madhavaram, T. Nagar, and Anna Nagar areas. As a result, 14 individuals were in the precancerous stage.
