The Department of Anaesthesiology at SMF has been providing comprehensive and safe anaesthesia care since the inception of the institution. With experience spanning over decades, the department delivers anaesthesia services to more than 3,000 patients annually, covering a wide range of surgical specialities and age groups—from neonates to geriatric patients. Our team comprises six senior consultants who provide round-the-clock anaesthesia services, ensuring high standards of patient care for both elective and emergency procedures.

Department Overview

  • Established at the inception of SMF 
  • Initially started with two consultants; currently strengthened with six senior consultants 
  • Provides 24×7 anaesthesia coverage  
  • Successfully running a DNB Anaesthesiology programme since 2000, enrolling 5 candidates every year 
  • Over 60 DNB candidates trained, now well placed in India and abroad
  • Recognised centre for conducting Final DNB Practical and FAT examinations  

Treatment / Services Provided

Pre-Anaesthesia Assessment 

  • Dedicated Pre-Anaesthetic Clinic conducted twice daily (morning & evening) in the OPD 
  • Identifies potential anaesthetic risks and existing medical conditions 
  • Helps quantify perioperative risk and plan individualised care 
  • Provides an opportunity to explain anaesthesia techniques, risks, and benefits to patients and alleviate anxiety 
  • Chronic pain management services offered by prior appointment.

Postoperative Pain Management 

  • Multimodal pain management strategies for effective postoperative pain relief.

Labour Analgesia

  • Painless labour epidural analgesia services provided in the labour room 

Procedures and Interventions

General Anaesthesia:

  • Patient rendered unconscious with adequate analgesia; breathing managed using anaesthesia workstations and ventilators 

Neuraxial Blocks (Spinal / Epidural Anaesthesia): 

  • Anaesthesia provided to the region around and below the umbilicus 

Peripheral Nerve blocks

  • Targeted anaesthesia for surgeries limited to a specific limb 

Monitored Anaesthesia Care (MAC):

  • Provided in Ophthalmology OT, Endoscopy Suite, and Radiology Suite for procedures under local anaesthesia with or without sedation

Facilities

  • Anaesthesia services provided for all elective and emergency surgeries across all specialities except cardiac surgery
  • Three fully equipped operating theatres conforming to NABH standards 
  • Equipped with modern anaesthesia workstations and state-of-the-art monitors 
  • Continuous monitoring of vital parameters throughout surgery and the immediate postoperative period 
  • Standard monitoring includes ECG, NIBP, SpO₂, ETCO₂, cardiac rhythm, and respiratory rate for all cases, irrespective of surgery duration 
  • In-house consultants available 24×7 for emergency and elective cases

  • DNB Anaesthesiology programme running successfully since 2000 
  • Annual intake of 5 candidates
  • Over 60 trained specialists contributing nationally and internationally
  • Active role in conducting Final DNB Practical and FAT examinations
